Latin Grammys 2015: Celebrities shine at the red carpet
From Roselyn Sanchez’s jaw-dropping skin-colored halter dress to Zoe Saldana’s body-hugging black gown, the red carpet at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas was dripping with beauty, talent and fashion.
Mexican rockers Maná are going to be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with President Barack Obama at the White House.
“We are very happy that we will be going to the White House on May 5 to celebrate the day for Latinos and Mexico,” the band's frontman Fher Olvera said Spanish in a video posted on their Facebook page on Wednesday. “We are very happy that we will be seeing Mr. Obama again. We will see you there soon.”
The top-selling Latin music rock band long has been a supporter Obama, performing for him on several occasions including at his 2013 inaugural ball.
“Wow, if you had told me 25 years ago that one day the band Maná would play in the White House, I wouldn’t have believed it,” Olvera told BuzzFeed News in a statement. “We feel proud to share our music and culture [which] without a doubt is an integral part of the United States.”
The band, which has never shied away from controversial topics, has been very active during the 2016 U.S. presidential election campaign, denouncing GOP front-runner Donald Trump for his comments about Mexican immigrants. The band has urged fans at its U.S. concerts to vote.
At the Latin Grammy Awards in November, Maná performed the song “Somos Más Americanos” (“We're More American”) with the norteño band Los Tigres del Norte and held up a Spanish-language poster reading, “Latinos united. Don’t vote for racists.”
“We think it’s important [to use] any platform – be it the Grammys, be it a concert, be it with the press. It’s important to speak out,” drummer Alex González told reporters at the time. “We think it’s a perfect moment. At the end of the day, we are musicians, but we are human beings also. We are worried and concerned about many things going on in the world.”
They have also gotten involved in get-out-the-vote efforts in the U.S.
The band has not released a set list for its performance at the White House next week – but BuzzFeed reported the group are expected to play five to seven songs.
