Virginia Commonwealth University has told students and staff to "resume normal activity," after reports of a gunman on or near its Monroe Park campus in Richmond. Police tell Fox News they are still searching the area.

Investigators described the possible suspect as a male wearing a green shirt and jacket, a "square, military-style cap," and a black backpack. They say reports indicated the suspect carried a rifle. Police say they haven't found anyone matching that description.

Spokesman James Mercante says police received a call just before 10 a.m. Eastern time.

An alert on the university's website tells students, staff and visitors to report unusual activity to police.

VCU's Monroe Park campus is approximately 12 blocks northwest of the Virginia State Capitol building.
