Service held for NY teen swept away by Hawaii sea
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Relatives and friends have been telling stories and comforting each other at a memorial service for a 15-year-old from suburban New York City who was swept out to sea in Hawaii.
Tyler Madoff's (MAD'-ahfs) parents, brother, coaches and teachers addressed a crowd of about 500 on Thursday.
The service in New Rochelle (roh-SHEHL'), N.Y., was held in a room with windows looking out on Long Island Sound.
Michael Madoff called his late son "our prince among the angels."
The teen from White Plains, N.Y., was hiking on July 4 during a kayak expedition. He was lost while resting at a tidal pool with huge waves.
Another hiker, 15-year-old Matthew Alzate (ahl-ZAH'-tay) of Miami, was initially hospitalized in critical condition. He is still recovering from his injuries.
