OTTAWA, Ill. – A state appeals court is hearing arguments from lawyers seeking to overturn the murder conviction of former suburban Chicago police sergeant Drew Peterson in his third wife's 2004 death.
The Chicago Tribune reports that attorneys for the ex-Bolingbrook officer are challenging his 2012 conviction. They claim prosecutors shouldn't have been allowed to present secondhand evidence and Peterson's previous lawyer provided ineffective counsel.
The arguments are Thursday in the Third District Court of Appeals.
Peterson is serving a 38-year sentence for killing Kathleen Savio, and is a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.
He also faces charges in an alleged murder-for-hire plot to kill the Will County State's Attorney. A trial in that case is scheduled for early July. The 61-year-old Peterson has pleaded not guilty.
