An Air Force base near Tucson is on lockdown amid unconfirmed reports of gunfire.

A Davis-Monthan Air Force Base spokesperson would not confirm that shots had been fired or if anyone has been wounded.

Senior Airman Timothy Dunaway says traffic has been reduced to a single-point entry but he refused to elaborate.

He says the Sonoran Science Academy on the base is on lockdown. KVOA-TV reports the kids are safe on the base.

Tucson fire spokeswoman Trish Tracy says the agency sent two ambulances and two fire trucks to the base.

Davis-Monthan is adjacent to the Pima Air & Space Museum and the "boneyard" for old military and government airplanes that is a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts.
