Tortoise escapes from a Florida backyard and brings traffic to a crawl

Fingers are being pointed at a wayward 100-pound tortoise for bringing traffic to a crawl at a Sarasota, Fla., intersection.

Deputies with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department found the big turtle blocking the road at Webber Street and Honore Avenue Thursday.

"We were able to get the tortoise out of the road. It was quite heavy. It took a couple of people, but we put it in our truck and tried to make attempts to find its owners," SCSO captain Ron Locke told

He said deputies found the owners through Facebook.

"This tortoise belongs to us. His name is Dozer," Ryan Adams said in comments posted on the SCSO Facebook page. They were reunited Friday.

Adams said Dozer escaped from his backyard home through a new hole he created in the fence.
