A West Virginia man suspected of slaying five people in their rural home before killing himself had spent 14 months behind bars for armed robbery.

The state Division of Corrections says 22-year-old Shayne Riggleman of Morgantown was sentenced in December 2008 to a prison for young offenders. Corrections spokeswoman Susan Harding said he served his time at the Anthony Correctional Center from January 2009 to March 2010.

Authorities say Riggleman shot five people to death near Morgantown on Monday, then fled by car. They say he ran down an elderly woman in neighboring Pennsylvania and wounded a gas station attendant as he crossed back through West Virginia before shooting himself to death when a police car pulled him over in Kentucky.

Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the shootings.
