Police say a gunman fired multiple shots in a huge mail processing area of Montgomery's main post office. No one was injured and officers quickly took the suspect into custody.

Police Chief Kevin Murphy says the man in his late 20s, or early 30s had not yet been charged. He says police got a 911 call from the post office at 6:38 p.m. Thursday that someone was firing shots.

Several officers were at a nearby shopping center on holiday patrols. Murphy says they arrived quickly and had the man in custody within 10 minutes, probably saving lives. He says the man had several pistols with him and that it was unclear how many shots he fired.

He could not say if the suspect had worked for the postal service.
