Police say the student whose disappearance prompted the closure of the Washington College campus in Maryland has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Pennsylvania state police say the body of 19-year-old Jacob Marberger was found Saturday afternoon at a picnic area at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Pennsylvania. Police say he fatally shot himself.

Marberger was a sophomore at Washington College in Chestertown on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The school was closed Monday after his parents reported that he had a gun and they were unable to reach him.

School officials decided to cancel classes through the Thanksgiving break. There were no direct threats to the campus.

College officials say counselors will be available to students when classes resume on Nov. 30.
