Roger H.C. Donlon was a U.S. Army Special Forces officer and the first recipient of the Medal of Honor for service in the Vietnam War. He earned the award for his actions during an attack on a Special Forces camp at Nam Dong in July 1964. Despite being wounded, Donlon repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to organize defenses, treat the wounded, and repel the assault. President Lyndon B. Johnson presented him with the Medal of Honor on December 5, 1964. He served in the Army for 33 years and retired with the rank of colonel. Donlon later wrote about his experiences in Vietnam in his books Outpost of Freedom and Beyond Nam Dong.
