WASHINGTON – A North Carolina man who admitted to trying to provide support to the Islamic State terrorist group has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
The U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday that 44-year-old Donald Ray Morgan also faces three years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.
Morgan pleaded guilty in October 2014 to attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and possession of firearm by a felon.
According to prosecutors, Morgan tried to provide support and resources to the Islamic State. Morgan unsuccessfully tried to travel from Lebanon to Syria to join fighting.
Morgan was arrested last August at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on a federal indictment of possession of a firearm by a felon.
