CHARLOTTE, N.C. – As prosecutors try a white Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man two years ago, they have elicited testimony from a fellow officer who says he would have acted differently.
Court will resume Friday in the trial of officer Randall Kerrick, charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of Jonathan Ferrell.
Officer Adam Neal, who was with Kerrick at the shooting scene, testified Thursday that he would have opted to put Ferrell in a sleeper hold instead of shooting him.
Prosecutors say Kerrick is guilty because he overreacted when he killed Ferrell.
Defense lawyers say the shooting was justified because Ferrell charged officers before they could figure out what was going on and he tried to grab Kerrick's gun when he fell on the officer.
