Police in two different parts of Florida are investigating after two men on opposite sides of the state were killed by the same train Friday.
The two victims were killed instantly, SunSentinel.com reports, as police investigate how the men wound up on the tracks in the first place.
Florida East Coast Railway Train 210 was traveling north from Miami when it struck and killed 19-year-old Jonathan Adario at about 4 a.m. Friday, authorities said.
"We believe that Mr. Adario was lying near the railroad tracks when the train struck him,"
Detective Travis Mandell of the Fort Lauderdale Police told SunSentinel.com.
The train was assigned a new crew after the first accident.
At about 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, the same train struck and killed another man 435 miles away.
Authorities are waiting for more information before identifying the man, SunSentinel.com reports. Sgt. Chuck Mulligan of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said that authorities believe the victim entered the pathway of the train, and are investigating whether it was a suicide.
"Obviously there's a great deal of trauma in this tragedy," he told SunSentinel.com.
"It's probably one of the worst things that can happen to an engineer," John Bentley, a spokesman for the Cleveland-based Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, told SunSentinel.com.
