Nashville police say a 91-year-old man suffering from dementia shot his caregiver daughter in the abdomen, critically wounding her.

Police said 61-year-old Patricia Stafford Crull is in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after the shooting around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

According to police, Crull called 911 and reported she was shot by her father, Freeman Stafford. She later told emergency responders that her father suffered from dementia and he shot her while she was assisting him with a handheld urinal.

A .22-caliber revolver, was recovered from a shoebox beside his bed.

Police said Stafford appeared to unaware of the shooting when officers arrived. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
