A western New York school board has unanimously voted to approve changing the nickname of the district's athletic teams from the Redskins to the Legends.

The Lancaster School Board officially adopted the new team name, mascot and logo during Monday night's meeting.

Last week, Lancaster students voted to choose the Legends nickname from a list of seven candidates.

The vote was conducted after the school board agreed in March to retire the district's 70-year-old Redskin nickname, considered by many to be an insult to Native Americans.

The issue drew national attention after several Buffalo-area school districts with Native American students began canceling lacrosse games with Lancaster teams.
