BOSTON – Collin Binkley, an award-winning reporter who has been recognized for his aggressive use of public records to hold institutions accountable, is joining the Boston bureau of The Associated Press.
The appointment was announced Monday by Karen Testa, the AP's east regional editor, and William J. Kole, New England news editor.
Binkley, 26, has distinguished himself at The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch with records-driven reporting that shed light on a culture of secrecy at Ohio State University.
He was part of a team honored Sunday with the First Amendment Award from the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors for an investigation that revealed how colleges discipline students accused of violent crimes and shield results from the public. He also took first place for explanatory reporting for a story about a scam targeting federal education grants.
"Collin is hard-hitting and relentless — the kind of reporter who won't take 'no' for an answer. We're delighted to welcome him and his news chops, energy and expertise to New England," Kole said.
Binkley joined The Dispatch as an intern in 2010 and worked as a suburban government and K-12 education reporter before being promoted to the paper's higher education beat.
He has a degree in journalism and English from Ohio State. He begins in Boston on June 1.
