DeAndre Kane scored 18 points and Marshall used a strong first half to beat woeful Savannah State 71-57 on Monday night.

Damier Pitts finished with 15 points and Shaquille Johnson had 11 for the Thundering Herd (12-4), who scored the first 11 points of the contest and never looked back. Dago Pena's 3-pointer with 6:44 left in the first half gave Marshall a 31-8 lead — its largest for the game.

Savannah State (2-17), which lost its fourth straight, pulled no closer than nine points the rest of the way. Marshall held the Tigers to 33.9 percent (21 of 62) from the floor, while making half of their shots (22 of 44).

Marshall made 21 free throws while the Tigers connected on just eight. The Thundering Herd also outrebounded Savannah State 40-25.

Joshua Montgomery led the Tigers with 20 points, Jovonni Shuler scored 16 points and Preston Blackmon had 12.
