With the loss Utah fell two games behind Houston and Denver for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot. Both teams are in action Friday.
Chris Kaman added 19 points for New Orleans, which has won four of its last six games.
Paul Millsap finished with 27 points and eight rebounds for the Jazz and Al Jefferson scored 19 in the setback.
