“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” is at the top of the world.
The long-running CBS crime drama broke the Guinness World Record for the largest television drama simulcast of all time, airing in 171 countries on March 4, dubbed “World CSI Day.” The net announced the achievement Tuesday.
Exec producers Jerry Bruckheimer, Anthony Zuiker and Jonathan Littman received the award.
The particular episode that broke the world record, titled “Kitty,” originally aired in the States on April 30, 2014, and acted as the planted spinoff for “CSI: Cyber,” which premiered as its own standalone series this month.
The flagship “CSI” series has launched three spinoffs — most recently “Cyber,” in which Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette stars, plus “CSI: Miami” and “CSI: NY,” both of which were huge successes, but are no longer on the air. “Miami” ran for 10 seasons from 2002 to 2012, and “NY” for nine seasons, ending in 2013.
“World CSI Day” celebrated 15 years of the “CSI” franchise and the U.S. launch of “CSI: Cyber.”
The previous Guinness World Record for the largest TV drama simulcast belonged to “Doctor Who” for the 50th anniversary special, which was seen in 98 countries in Nov. 2013.
This week, Fox announced another world-takeover attempt with the launch of the M. Night Shyamalan psychological thriller “Wayward Pines,” which will unprecedentedly premiere in 125 countries.
