A log cabin that a family reported stolen was found Thursday in rural northeast Washington, authorities said.

Stevens County Sheriff Kendle Allen said deputies following a tip found the cabin Thursday morning about 10 miles from where it was originally built. Allen said the structure was placed on stilts and was sitting at the end of a private road in Springdale, Washington.

Investigators think whoever took the cabin was living in it.

Chris Hempel told The Spokesman-Review that her family drove to their cabin Tuesday and found the entire structure missing. Hempel said the neighbors did not hear anything, which made her believe thieves may have come at night.

Hempel told the paper that her husband and their two kids have owned the property for about four years and visit it every two weeks. However, the family returned April 7 to find it missing – stolen off its foundation.

Allen said deputies are getting a search warrant to get onto the property and inside the cabin. Allen did not disclose the name of the suspects.
