The life of a 16-year-old girl stabbed to death at a Connecticut school a year ago is being celebrated by hundreds of people with a road race, fried food and live music.

The event Saturday at Jonathan Law High School in Milford honors Maren Sanchez, who was killed in a school hallway on April 25, 2014. A classmate is charged with murder in her death.

A baseball field behind the school filled with bounce houses and families on picnic blankets. Principal Fran Thompson says Maren was beloved by the school community and the idea of the daylong event is to remember her as she would have wanted, with smiles and joy.

The teenager charged in the slaying, Christopher Plaskon, is awaiting trial after pleaded not guilty.
