EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- An East Providence woman police say held a crowd at bay with a baseball bat as her teenage daughter fought another girl has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Authorities say 40-year-old Kerri King warned a crowd of teens who had come to watch the fight not to interfere, and then hit an 18-year-old girl with the bat when she jumped into the fray.

Police say King arranged the fight between her 17-year-old daughter and the 15-year-old girl on Sunday because they were in a dispute over a boy.

King says she was struck first and was only trying to break up the fight to protect her daughter.

King was released on $10,000 recognizance at her arraignment Tuesday and ordered not to have contact with the girl she allegedly hit.
