GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Authorities say a man who crashed his vehicle in western Colorado and then told emergency workers he killed his wife has been charged with first-degree murder.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports (http://tinyurl.com/n4hfytt ) that 46-year-old Arturo Navarrete-Portillo was charged Tuesday in the Feb. 16 stabbing death of 30-year-old Maria Carminda Portillo-Amaya at their apartment in Carbondale.
Navarrete-Portillo was being held without bail. His attorney, Sara Steele, didn't immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment.
Police say Navarrete-Portillo was involved in a crash after the stabbing, and he supposedly told emergency responders he had killed his wife.
A court document detailing officers' reasons for arresting Navarrete-Portillo remains sealed.
Prosecutors have said they probably will not seek the death penalty.
