Three teenagers have been charged with criminal possession of a weapon — frozen snowballs that authorities say they hurled at a New York City mail carrier, MyFoxNY reports.

Police say the victim, Russell Bumpurs, was pummeled in the head and body with the snowballs while on his route in Brooklyn's Flatlands section on Thursday.

Postal Service spokeswoman Darleen Reid-De Meo told the New York Post she's never seen anything like it in her 26 years with the agency.

One of the suspects, Walter Ward, 16, was arraigned Thursday night. His alleged accomplices, two juveniles, were given desk appearance tickets.

The judge ordered the teens to stay away from Bumpurs.

"If you violate it, you will be arrested and face additional charges," Judge Joanne Quinones was quoted as saying.

Bumpurs was treated for bruises and swelling, and then return to his route.
