A youth hockey community in Minnesota is in mourning after a 14-year-old boy failed to regain consciousness after collapsing on the ice during a tournament game Friday afternoon.

The game had just started when Patrick Schoonover hit the ice at the Brainerd arena. He was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. What caused Patrick to collapse and whether it was related to action on the ice had not been determined Saturday, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

“We lost our son Patrick last night,” his family said in a statement posted on the Eastview Hockey Association’s website. “He passed away unexpectedly playing the game he loved so much. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the Eastview and Minnesota hockey community to our family.”

The Star Tribune said Patrick skated for an Eastview bantam team. The team was one of 16 teams playing in the Blue Ox Bantam Hockey Tournament. Their opponent Friday was Wayzata.

“It was a really sad situation to witness,” Wayzata coach Nate Hagerno told the paper.

Brainerd police and emergency medical personnel responded to a report that a player was unconscious. When they got there, a paramedic who was at the rink was already administering aid.

The Minnesota Wild hockey team was among those offering condolences to Schoonover’s parents, three siblings and teammates.  The boy’s father is the president of the Eastview board of directors.
