WASHINGTON – Veteran Washington editor Carole Feldman, who has driven multiformat coverage of national politics, science and medicine, and conducted extensive training of journalists across formats, has been appointed The Associated Press' education beat team leader, effective immediately.
Feldman will expand the reach of the team and energize the AP's focus on this critical subject, through print, photo, video and interactive coverage.
"Education is one of our most important and challenging beats — both an intensely local issue in each community, and a subject of great national and global importance. What happens in one jurisdiction can often be of great interest to others if we report aggressively and contextually," said senior managing editor Michael Oreskes.
By expanding the smaller beat team, the AP will be able to offer members a much broader look at what is happening in their state as well as nationally. Feldman's team will watch for trends and policy and produce rich, analytical reporting on the wealth of data on student performance, teacher and school quality.
Over nearly 35 years with the AP, Feldman has supervised coverage of a wide range of beats, including the White House, Congress, national security, the economy and health, science and medicine. Feldman will also continue her role in Washington as director of news operations and finance, leading the effort to cover news more efficiently across all formats and facilitating training for the bureau and the Broadcast News Center.
She graduated from Pennsylvania State University and has a master's from Boston University.
