A doctor who got a Maryland medical license despite a 1987 Florida rape conviction has settled a civil lawsuit alleging he molested a female patient.

Attorney Seth D'Atri of Cumberland said Wednesday his client reached the settlement with William Dando and Dando's former employer, MedExpress Urgent Care of Morgantown, West Virginia.

Attorneys say the terms are confidential.

The plaintiff was one of three women who complained Dando touched them improperly during examinations at a LaVale, Maryland, clinic in 2013 and 2014. Dando permanently surrendered his medical license in September to avoid criminal prosecution in Maryland.

The state Board of Physicians has acknowledged it failed to investigate Dando before granting him a license in 1996.

A new state law requiring criminal background checks for medical license applicants takes effect July 1.
