A Litchfield man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting his wife in the leg at their home in 2009.

The Republican-American reports that John Lavoie said he would rather die than go to prison and asked a judge to euthanize him during his sentencing Wednesday in Litchfield Superior Court.

Judge James P. Ginocchio told Lavoie that he was going to prison because of his own actions and that it was his choice if he wanted to live.

The 57-year-old Lavoie said he shot his wife, Shelly, because of her alleged infidelities. A jury convicted him of assault last fall.

Lavoie is partially paralyzed and uses a wheelchair. He said prison is a death sentence for him because he won't get the medical care he needs.
