The Minnesota Twins have scratched center fielder Denard Span for their series opener against Oakland because of a sore right shoulder.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire says Span hurt his shoulder while diving for a ball against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night. Span initially was penciled into the lineup on Friday night. But after he took some batting practice he told Gardenhire that his shoulder was still sore and he was given the night off.

Ben Revere got his first big league start in Span's place.

Span is listed as day to day. Gardenhire also said right fielder Jason Kubel will rest his sore wrist for the first two games of the series and hopefully return to the lineup Sunday.
