Isner advances at Delray Beach

Top-seeded John Isner advanced to the quarterfinals at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Wednesday.

The Greensboro, NC native, entering the week with a career-best No. 11 world ranking, bested fellow American Ryan Sweeting 6-3, 6-4 in one hour, seven minutes. Isner fired 10 aces and was never broken.

In other second-round action, eighth-seeded Australian Bernard Tomic handled qualifier Tim Smyczek in 6-1, 7-5 fashion. Tomic saved all seven break chances against him on the hardcourts at Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center.

Meanwhile, unheralded Aussie qualifier Marinko Matosevic fought back to upset sixth-seeded struggling Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr. 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 and 2010 Delray Beach champion Ernests Gulbis of Latvia overcame Belgian Steve Darcis 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-3. Gulbis will meet Matosevic in Friday's quarterfinals.

The 2012 Delray Beach winner will collect $75,780.
