Police say an officer fatally shot a man who punched him in the face during a confrontation behind an office building in Plantation.

Detective Philip Toman says the officer was on a routine foot patrol when he spotted the man and asked him to move along. Toman says the man assaulted the officer, who used a stun gun on him. Toman says the man continued to become more aggressive and the officer shot him.

Police haven't released the name of the man or the officer.

Toman didn't say how many times the man was shot. Police say he was taken to a hospital and died after surgery. The officer had minor injuries.

Toman says officers routinely conduct foot patrols. He says there may be surveillance video from the plaza.
