Investigators in Kentucky say a forensic exam shows that a woman whose remains were found a year ago on the side of a road had been shot to death and scalped.

Now, State Police Detective Chad Winn says, the challenge is identifying the woman and piecing together what led to her violent death.

Winn says the woman, who was between 20 and 50 years old, stood between 5 feet 9 inches and perhaps as tall as 6 feet 1 inch and was of Native American descent, may not have been from Kentucky. Students searching an area in southern Kentucky for a rare tree found the remains in August 2011.

Winn is hoping publicity about the death will jar someone's memory and spur a new lead.
