LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say three people exchanging information after a Southern California freeway crash were hit by another vehicle and killed.

The fatal accident happened at about 2:10 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 101 in Los Angeles' Sherman Oaks district.

The California Highway Patrol says the three killed had been involved in a three-car accident and had stepped out of their vehicles to exchange information when they were struck by a 2000 BMW. Two men and a woman were killed, and one man was injured.

CHP officer Anthony Martin says the accident shut down all but one traffic lane on the eastbound side of the highway for several hours.
