The lawyer for a man whose wife is charged with helping two convicted murderers escape from prison says his client was shocked by word of the escape plot and that his wife had discussed having the inmates kill him.

Authorities have said Joyce Mitchell, who got close to inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt while working with them in the prison tailor shop, discussed killing her husband.

Mitchell and her husband, Lyle, worked as instructors at the Clinton Correctional Facility, where the men were reported missing June 6. Sweat and Matt remain at large.

Lyle Mitchell's lawyer, Peter Dumas, said Thursday that when Joyce Mitchell backed out of being the inmates' getaway driver they "threatened her" by saying they'd have someone harm her husband.
