TUCSON, Ariz. – A federal judge is considering whether to give authorities more time to restore Jared Lee Loughner's competency to stand trial in the Tucson shooting rampage.
U.S. District Judge Larry Burns had ruled in May that Loughner was not mentally fit to stand trial in the Jan. 8 shooting that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
Loughner has since been at a federal prison facility in Springfield, Mo.
Burns says in an order released Tuesday that a doctor's progress report states that Loughner remains incompetent to stand trial.
A letter from the warden asks for more time to determine whether Loughner can become competent for trial. Burns says he's treating that as a request for more time to restore Loughner to competency.
