Glider crashes in Wash. during filming of GM ad

CLE ELUM, Wash. – General Motors says a glider that crashed at a Washington state airport, killing the pilot, was involved in filming a commercial for the automaker.

The Kittitas County sheriff's office says the glider was being towed down the runway at an airport about 75 miles southeast of Seattle and was just starting to lift off when it crashed Thursday. A helicopter was filming the glider from above Cle Elum Municipal Airport.

The sheriff's office says the pilot, 53-year-old William Weller of Tukwila, was the only person on board.

GM spokesman Patrick Morrissey called the accident "tragic" on Friday.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration says the glider was registered to Northwest Eagles Soaring of Tukwila. Calls to the company went unanswered Friday.
