Authorities in North Carolina say they are pursuing felony charges against a Fort Bragg soldier who took two dogs from the home of their owner and slit their throats.

Detectives with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that Army Staff Sgt. Al Richard Charlie faces felony charges of stealing the dogs, possession of stolen property and animal cruelty.

Deputies say the 32-year-old soldier took the Labrador mixed-breed dogs Lucky and Wanagit on Monday evening and cut their throats with a knife. Authorities say Charlie dumped their bodies in trash bags along a roadside.

A sheriff's office spokesman said Charlie was charged earlier this year with domestic violence and in 2013 with unlawfully discharging a firearm.
