The former headmaster of an elite Delaware prep school founded by members of the du Pont family has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for dealing in child pornography.

Fifty-five-year-old Christopher Wheeler, who was convicted at a bench trial in December, showed no emotion as he was sentenced Friday.

Wheeler's attorney, who plans to appeal, described the mandatory minimum sentence scheme that Wheeler faced — two years each on 25 counts — as "obscene" and "outrageous."

Wheeler is a former headmaster at Tower Hill school in Wilmington, whose graduates include DuPont Co. CEO Ellen Kullman, U.S. Sen. Chris Coons and television personality Dr. Oz.

Wheeler waived his right to a jury trial after the judge denied a defense motion to suppress evidence seized by police.
