BOULDER, Colo. – The driver in a fatal rollover crash in Boulder Canyon earlier this month has been accused of intentionally crashing the car and charged with murder after a passenger told authorities the driver said he killed one passenger on purpose and was trying to kill another.
Kelley Wiggins, 37, was charged with one count of first-degree murder with extreme indifference, three counts of attempted murder, first-degree assault and child abuse.
"There was considerable concern for the level of recklessness Mr. Wiggins displayed," Boulder County Deputy District Attorney Tim Johnson said at a hearing Thursday, where an attorney for Wiggins asked that his bond be reduced.
Wiggins was the driver of a vehicle that crashed on Boulder Canyon Drive on Aug. 4, according to an arrest affidavit.
A female passenger, Alexus Valentin, 21, of Boulder, was killed. Four other people, including Wiggins, were hospitalized. Prosecutors said one of the people in the car was a 14-month-old child, the Boulder Daily Camera reported (http://bit.ly/1hjOXOY).
According to a police report, one of the people in the car at the time said Wiggins later told her that he killed Valentin on purpose and was also trying to kill the man in the front seat, Ryan Hohlt of Boulder.
Wiggins is set for a preliminary hearing Oct. 13 and remains in custody at the Boulder County Jail on $250,000 bond.
Wiggins' attorney, Amanda Bailhache, asked District Judge Andrew Macdonald to reduce the bond to $50,000, citing Wiggins' ties to the community, but the judge refused.
