A 19-year-old Minneapolis man is accused of lying to the FBI after authorities say he and three other young men from Minneapolis took a bus to New York City and tried to board international flights.

Hamza Ahmed was arrested as authorities investigate people who have gone to Syria to fight with the Islamic State group. He was charged with making a false statement in a terrorism investigation.

Court documents say Ahmed and three others, identified only by initials, were scheduled to leave JFK on Nov. 9, but they were stopped.

Ahmed is accused of lying to agents about knowing the other men and his travel itinerary.

He appeared Thursday in federal court and was appointed a federal defender. The lawyer who represented him at his hearing had no comment.
