Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Towering South African Kevin Anderson upset Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka in straight sets Thursday at the $3.145 million Rogers Cup, a Masters 1000 tennis event.
The 6-foot-8 Anderson powered his way past the third-seeded Swiss Wawrinka 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals on the hardcourts at Rexall Centre.
Anderson, who played collegiate tennis at the University of Illinois, also upset the Monte Carlo Masters titlist Wawrinka at the Masters event at Indian Wells earlier this season.
Eighth-seeded Andy Murray received a walkover into the quarters when 12th- seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet pulled out of the draw due to an abdominal strain. Gasquet was the Rogers Cup runner-up in 2006 and 2012.
The two-time Grand Slam champion Murray was the back-to-back Rogers Cup champ in 2009 and 2010.
The winner of this storied tournament, which was first held in 1881, will earn $600,000.
