NEW YORK (Reuters) - Derek Jeter's march toward 3,000 career hits suffered a setback when the New York Yankees shortstop left Monday's game against Cleveland with a sore right calf.
Jeter inched closer to the milestone when he collected his 2,994th hit but he limped down the first base line after flying out to right field in the fifth inning and was replaced to start the sixth.
New York lost the game 1-0.
"He's getting an MRI right now. I'm not sure what we're going to discover, but obviously he looked pretty sore," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters. "We'll just keep our fingers crossed and hopefully it's not too serious."
The 36-year-old Yankees' captain is on the verge of becoming the 28th Major League player to reach 3,000 hits, adding yet another honor to a career that includes five World Series.
