Bayer Leverkusen announced on Monday that former Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia has been placed in temporary charge of the club after former boss Robin Dutt was sacked over the weekend.

Dutt was let go after Leverkusen sustained its fifth straight defeat on Saturday, losing 2-0 at home against Freiburg to drop the club to seventh in the Bundesliga table.

Hyypia will work alongside Under-19 coach Sascha Lewandowski in an effort to help Leverkusen secure a place in the Europa League for next season with six games to play.

The former Finland international spent two seasons at Leverkusen in his playing days and his first match in charge of the club will come Sunday at Hamburg.
