Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Braves signed outfielder Zoilo Almonte to a one-year contract Monday while bringing in a pair of veteran pitchers on minor league deals.
Almonte had spent his entire career in the Yankees organization and hit .211 with two home runs and 12 RBI over 47 major league games spread across two seasons with New York. The switch-hitting Dominican had been outrighted off the Yankees' 40-man roster in September.
The 25-year-old spent much of the 2014 campaign at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, batting .261 with 18 homers and 69 RBI in 105 games with the RailRiders.
Atlanta also signed right-hander Chien-Ming Wang and lefty reliever Donnie Veal to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training.
Wang, a 19-game winner for the Yankees in both 2006 and 2007, pitched in Triple A for both the White Sox and Reds organizations last season. The 34- year-old compiled a 13-8 record with a 4.12 ERA over 28 overall starts.
Veal has appeared in 100 major league games, including 50 with the White Sox in 2013. He went 4-5 with a 5.94 ERA and four saves over 37 outings with Triple-A Charlotte last season.
