Reputed mob boss acquitted in 1997 slaying of off-duty NYC police officer

NEW YORK – A reputed mob boss has been acquitted in the 1997 gangland slaying of an off-duty New York City police officer who had married his ex-wife.

The federal jury in Brooklyn returned the verdict Tuesday in the trial of Joel Cacace (kuh-KAYS'). He was cleared of murder in aid of racketeering in the killing of Officer Ralph Dols.

The 72-year-old Cacace is currently serving a 20-year sentence for another mob murder.

Last year, a different jury hearing the case acquitted another reputed former boss of the Colombo crime family, Thomas "Tommy Guns" Gioeli. Reputed mob soldier Dino "Little Dino" Saracino also was found not guilty.
