LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles prosecutors are about to present their case against three of four teens charged with fatally beating a Chinese graduate student during an attempted robbery last year.

A judge hearing evidence Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court will rule whether the defendants will be tried on a murder charge in the killing of Xinran Ji. Proceedings against the fourth defendant were delayed because his attorney is ill.

Authorities say the victim, a 24-year-old University of Southern California engineering student, was beaten with a bat and wrench as he walked to his apartment.

The killing led to renewed concerns about the safety of Chinese students at USC, which is popular with foreign students. Two other Chinese graduate students were murdered in 2012.

The campus is surrounded by high-crime neighborhoods.
