A woman working as a live-in housekeeper on Long Island has been arrested and charged with killing her newborn, whose body later was found in a garbage can.

Suffolk County Police say Santos Elena Ruiz Solano gave birth to a baby girl early Sunday at the West Islip home where she was employed. They say the baby suffered traumatic injuries shortly after her birth and died.

Police say 26-year-old Ruiz Solano then placed the baby in a plastic bag and left the house.

The mother went to a hospital for treatment of childbirth complications. Police say the baby later was recovered from a garbage can and given to hospital personnel.

Ruiz Solano is being held pending arraignment on a murder charge Friday. It wasn't clear if she had a lawyer.
