ATLANTA – Georgia is preparing to execute a death row inmate who shot a woman to death during a burglary in 1996.
Kenneth Fults is scheduled to die at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the state prison in Jackson. The 47-year-old inmate pleaded guilty in 1997 to killing his neighbor, 19-year-old Cathy Bounds, and a jury sentenced him to death.
Fults' lawyers have said he had an extremely tough childhood and an intellectual disability that keeps him from acting appropriately. They also pointed out flaws in his sentencing trial, including a juror they said was motivated by racial bias and a trial attorney who slept through part of the proceedings.
Fults would be the fourth person executed in Georgia this year. Another inmate, Daniel Lucas, is scheduled to die April 27.
