The pilot who was killed in the crash of a helicopter leased by a southern Arizona sheriff's department was a retired police officer in a Phoenix suburb.

The Glendale Police Department confirmed Thursday that retired Officer Jeff Steele was killed in the crash late Wednesday near Benson.

The department says Steele retired in 2011 after "25 distinguished years of service" that included working as a patrol officer, dog handler, SWAT team member and motorcycle officer.

The helicopter was leased by the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.

The other person killed was a mechanic whose identity was not immediately released.
