Belgium international center back Thomas term contract with Arsenal on Tuesday, although the length of the deal was not disclosed.

Vermaelen, 25, joined Arsenal in 2009 from Ajax, and was honored on the PFA Premier League Team of the season for the 2009-10 campaign. He has played 54 times for the Gunners, and has also contributed eight goals.

"We are absolutely delighted that Thomas has signed a new long-term contract. Our plan is always to sign top quality players and with Thomas extending his contract, we have done just that," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

"Thomas is a special player, who has always made a huge contribution on the pitch and we are looking forward to him being a part of our future at Arsenal Football Club."

Vermaelen has battled an ankle injury this season, but is closing in on full fitness. He was excited to sign the new deal.

"I am really happy to have signed a new contract with Arsenal," Vermaelen said. "I always had the intention to stay here."
